Both paxil preparations are identical as far as therapeutic properties are concerned, the difference being in the length of time they last in the body due to slow absorption of the cr preparation. the cr preparation was never released in australia and i think that is because the drug has a long half life (ie lasts a long time in the body). the use of slow release preparations is best for drugs that have to be taken frequently due to them having a short half-life. this is fine when instead of 3 times poer day once is adequate. with paxil, one a day of the 20mg is fine so why produce a cr preparation which still has to be once a day. the reason would probably be that the cr version produces level blood concentrations rather than fluctuating ones. i do not want to get involved with the science of pharmacokinetics but cr drugs for long half life drugs offer no advantage over the standard preparations. after about 5 days of either tablet blood conentrations will be fairly steady anyway. since paxil takes time to exert an affect this is of no consequence.
